about

CARTRIDGE MUSIC (1960)
On 20 December 2012, at ARCI 'Via d'Acqua' in Pavia, John Cage’s Cartridge Music composition was performed.
The composition was performed by children who attended a creative music course held at the association and, later, by adults. The adult musicians selected had varied backgrounds, ranging from free jazz to contemporary, rock, classical and electronic. They played the score created by the children using Cage’s indications. The original idea was born from the ‘sound objects’ experience enjoyed by the children during their course. The children (aged between six and eight) experimented with the different sounds produced by everyday objects; they modified these objects and performed simple scores using non-conventional language and symbols.
This project owes much to the work of John Cage, one of the twentieth century’s most important, innovative and revolutionary composers. His influence is still felt today, one rich in the potential for exploration.
Cage opened the door to a new space-time dimension: going through that door it is possible to take a journey through musical time; we can begin to explore the sounds of objects and of our environment, employing these for compositions. Another, parallel, consequence is that we begin to fall in love with music and spark an interest in the study of musical instruments.
All of this enhances what is hidden to many of us and we go beyond the limits imposed by ‘conservative’ teaching of music.
So, we decided to celebrate the centenary of Cage’s birth with a tribute; an interesting means to involve classmates, relatives and friends in examining this amazing and unknown world of sound.
The composition chosen for the tribute is Cartridge Music (1968); a piece never before performed by children.
Cartridge Music uses materials including old pick up needles, pipe cleaners, feathers and wires. For convenience we substituted the pick up needles with self-built contact microphones that produce a similar result.
Cage gives indications for the writing of the graphical parts, composed of twenty irregular-shaped white sheets, and four transparencies, in order to create a constellation whose lines provide a guide for the execution of the composition.

CARTRIDGE MUSIC (1960)
